The Shine Your Light Dream: Becoming Kingdom-Rich Givers

by Shai Wood | Feb 8, 2025

At Shine Your Light Foundation, we are called to teach children not just to succeed in this world, but to live with a Kingdom mindset. The world often sells a dream that revolves around accumulating wealth, independence, and endless consumption. But we believe God has a different and better dream for His people—one where we are Kingdom-rich, interdependent, and self-giving.

The World’s Dream: Consumption Machines

The world often tells children that success is measured by material wealth, independence, and personal fulfillment. The ultimate goal becomes becoming a consumer—constantly seeking to buy more, own more, and be more self-sufficient. This pursuit can leave people isolated, spiritually empty, and perpetually dissatisfied.

If unchecked, this mindset teaches children to value possessions over people, independence over community, and self-fulfillment over service. It creates individuals who are worldly rich but relationally and spiritually poor.

Shine Your Light’s Alternative: Kingdom-Rich Givers of Self

At Shine Your Light, we aim to break this pattern by instilling in children a Kingdom mindset rooted in faith, love, and service. We teach them that true success is not found in accumulation but in generosity—giving of themselves for the good of others and living in dependence on God and interdependence with their community.

Being Kingdom-rich means valuing relationships over possessions, humility over pride, and service over self-promotion. We teach the children that their identity as sons and daughters of God is their most valuable treasure, and their purpose is found in serving Him and others.

Living as Kingdom Givers

Here are some of the core principles we impart to the children at Shine Your Light:

  1. Radical Generosity: Everything we have is a gift from God. We encourage children to use their resources, talents, and time to bless others.
  2. Interdependence: We are stronger together. God created us to live in community, supporting and encouraging one another. Independence is not the goal; loving interdependence is.
  3. Service as Leadership: True leadership comes through service. We teach children to lead by example, humbling themselves to serve others just as Jesus did.
  4. Faith and Trust: Success is not about self-sufficiency but about trusting God for provision, guidance, and strength.

The Kingdom Dream in Action

Through our programs—the Shine Scholars, Egg-A-Day, and Shine Community Center—we create opportunities for children to practice these principles. They learn to share their resources, mentor younger students, and serve their communities. We emphasize that true joy and fulfillment come from being a blessing to others, not from the endless pursuit of more.

The Better Dream

The world offers a dream of worldly riches and consumption, but Jesus offers a better dream: a life of Kingdom richness marked by love, generosity, and service. Shine Your Light is committed to guiding children to choose this better path.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

We believe that by teaching children to treasure the things of God and live as Kingdom-rich givers of self, we are helping to raise a generation that will transform communities and bring light to the world.

A Call to Action

Let’s continue to model and teach these values to the next generation. May we, like the children we mentor, break free from the chains of worldly consumption and step boldly into the freedom of Kingdom living. The world doesn’t need more consumption machines; it needs Christ-like givers who will lay down their lives for the sake of others. That is the true dream worth pursuing.
